When you are planning projects that need to be completed, epoxy may be an excellent tool to incorporate into them. Epoxy is easy to use. It dries hard, requires little maintenance, and is very long lasting. To understand why epoxy is such an excellent tool to use, let’s look at what epoxy is and how it will benefit you.

What is Epoxy?

Epoxy is both an adhesive and sealant. Scientifically, it is a thermosetting epoxide polymer. This means

that once epoxy has cured, or gone through the thermosetting process, there is no way to un-cure it. Epoxy is actually made by mixing together an epoxide and a hardening agent. These chemicals react together, creating stiffened molecules. It is these stiffened molecules that give epoxy the hardness it is known for. Epoxy is an effective adhesive because it seeps into items’ pores, linking them together. It makes an almost unbreakable bond with whatever surface it is placed on.

Types of Epoxy

There are many types of epoxy. There are epoxy paints, epoxies for use on concrete, epoxy resins, and more. While there are epoxies for many different purposes, there are four main types of epoxies. They are polyamide epoxies, polyamine epoxies, phenolic epoxies, and novolac epoxies. Let’s look at their properties and what they are used for.

Polyamine Epoxies

Polyamine epoxies are resistant to abrasion and chemicals. They have a high degree of film hardness. Polyamine epoxies are an excellent choice if improve chemical resistance and abrasion resistance in the area you are using it. While they offer more resistance to chemicals, they are also more brittle and less flexible than some other epoxies.

Polyamide Epoxies

Polyamide epoxies reduce the resin’s vapor pressure. They are ideal to use in primers, because they improve the primer’s adhesion and flexibility. In addition, they are resistant to corrosion from materials other than acid or chalk. They are excellent for surfaces that are exposed to weather and/ or lots of moisture.

Novolac Epoxies

Novolac epoxies are highly resistant to chemicals and heat. They are unique in that they usually require high heat to cure. The base for a novolac epoxy is a reaction between phenol and formaldehyde that is caused by the use of acid as a catalyst.

Phenolic Epoxies

Phenolic epoxies are the least used type of epoxies. They are usually used in industrial capacities for creating chemically resistant containers such as drums and cans.

Where to Use Epoxy

Epoxy has a wide range of places it can be used. It is great for gluing woods or other objects together or to paint walls. It is a great choice for finishing a garage floor or driveway and can also be used to repair cracks or divots in concrete and wood.

Epoxy also has more crafty applications. You can make table or bar tops that have objects embedded in them with a clear epoxy resin poured over them. It can be used to create a colored see-through in-laying or between objects. Epoxy has very broad options for use and can be incorporated in many of your projects to make them last longer.

Epoxy has a ton of benefits. Since it dries so hard and has such great adhesive properties, it is a benefit to use.
